The Newlyweds
Celebration Seattle, WA
Nathan and Miller live in Seattle nowadays. In the late summer, weather permitting (as it
usually does), it is one of the most beautiful areas you'll have seen. It is surrounded by the
Cascade mountain range on the east, and the Olympic mountain range on the western peninsula.
A 360o view of mountains is just amazing. Just in case
that wasn't enough, Seattle is an isthmus itself, surrounded by Lake Washington on the east, and
Puget Sound on the west. Both can be visible from the hills around Seattle.
Schedule (PDT)
- Friday, August 30th:
- 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm family dinner at Nathan and Miller's (see notes).
(This includes grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, parents and siblings.)
- 10:00 pm rendezvous at the Cloud Room at the Camlin Hotel (see notes).
- Saturday, August 31th:
- 7:00 pm to 1:00 am the celebration at the Wilsonian (see notes).
The attire will be semi-casual to formal, as you desire (I will be wearing a tuxedo). There will
be a small buffet for dinner, as well as wedding cake. There will be no assigned seating except for
the wedding party and immediate family; people are encouraged to mix!
Greatly discounted parking will be available at two nearby lots.
For those people staying at the Camlin, a shuttle will be available. The shuttle to the Wilsonian
will run only from 6:45 pm to 7:30 pm or so, and may fill up. The shuttle back will run from 10:00 pm
to 12:45 am.
- Sunday, September 1st:
- 10:30 am to 1:00 pm brunch for all out-of-town guests at Mark and Mario's (see notes.
Mark and Mario have graciously accepted to help us out by recreating their annual brunch for
those coming from a distance! This is a brunch buffet with waffles and egg dishes and fruit and
other goodies. Come by before you fly home!
- Monday, September 2nd:
- 2:00 pm f.f. a BBQ at Chris Troth's (see notes) for alumni
(and their S.O.s) of Alpha Theta co-ed fraternity at Dartmouth College. Please RSVP to Chris!
Arrangements
- Flights The only real airport to fly into is Seattle-Tacoma (SEA-TAC). Try
Expedia or Orbitz.
You might want to check the website of the actual airline once you find a good, cheap flight;
they often have discounts.
NEW!!! Those of you flying SouthWest should check
to see if they have any fare specials. If the prices are currently lower than your tickets, you
can call them up and apply the difference as a SouthWest credit toward a flight within a year.
- Rental Cars You can get around Seattle by bus, some specific bus routes are mentioned
among the notes below. However, if you really desire to have a car, try Priceline
before you try the regular methods. They often can get you a car very cheaply.
- Hotel Reservations See the notes on the Camlin.
- Gift Registry If you feel the need to give us a wedding gift, just show up. If you feel that that
isn't enough, we have registered at Crate
& Barrel and JCPenney.
NEW!!! We just found a "china" pattern we enjoy: Nautica
Island Shores by Pfaltzgraff! We registered at the
Destin, Florida Pfaltzgraff at (850) 837-7009
(only two Pfaltzgraff stores carry it and it's not in their online catalog).
Important Locations
For a set of printable directions, click here.
- Camlin Hotel
(map
directions)
- Location Located in downtown Seattle, just across the street from the Convention
Center, the Convention Center bus terminal, and the Paramount Theater. It features a top
floor restaurant and the locally known Cloud Room lounge. It's a 15 to 20 minute walk up the hill to
Nathan and Miller's place, but only 5 minute walk downtown to Pacific Place and
Westlake Center shopping and the Monorail
to Seattle Center (see Bumbershoot).
- Reservations Make reservations for the "Herring/Sherling Wedding" to get our group
discount. The rate and the rooms will be released on August 6th. You can make reservations by phone at
(206) 682-0100, or on the
web.
- Rates $65/night ($75.14 with tax) for one or two people. More are $10/night extra, so
it's cost effective to share rooms; let us know if you're interested and we can try to help
coordinate. Parking is $15/day for the adjacent pay lot. (We heartily suggest trying the bus from
the Airport, the 174
and the 194 (express),
which is $1.25 each way.)
We have an up-to-date information packet summarizing important reception information at the front desk;
you should receive a copy for your room when you check in.
- Nathan and Miller's Condo
(directions)
505 Belmont Ave E Apt 304. It is located in the Capitol Hill district, at the
intersection of Belmont Ave E and Republican St. It is apartment #304 of
the Lamplighter building. For locals, it's three blocks east of Broadway, and three blocks north of Olive Way.
Parking is extremely limited on Capitol Hill, and although there are some visitor spots in front of
the building, they are few and often taken on this weekend.
- Wilsonian Grand Ballroom
(directions)
The Wilsonian used to be a hotel, but as the University district grew, shops grew up
around it, and enclosed it, and it switched to being an apartment building. The Grand Ballroom, whose
entrance is just north of the main entrance, is entirely surrounded. The Wilsonian is just north of the intersection
of 47th St and University Way. There are two buses that go from the Camlin
to the Wilsonian: the 66, which is
more direct, and the 43, which takes
a leisurely route over Capitol Hill first.
- Mark & Mario's
(directions)
Mark and Mario are putting on Sunday brunch for the out-of-towners. Street parking should
be relatively easily available.
- Chris Troth's
(directions)
Chris is hosting a BBQ for fellow alumni of Alpha Theta. Be careful of parking on sides of streets with
the zone permits required; usually the other side is free parking.
Things to do in Seattle
- Bumbershoot named after
the umbrella so often required during Seattle's frequent rains, this is a major (mostly) outdoor
music festival at Seattle Center that happens throughout Labor Day weekend every year. There are always three or four
major shows going on, and eight or more smaller shows, as well as standard fair-type foods and vendors.
There'll be more than enough time over the weekend to take advantage of some of this scene!
Tickets go on sale in July.
- Fremont this neighborhood is the self-styled "center of the universe," and is home to a number
of eclectic features of Seattle: the Troll, a
statue of Lenin, and a rocket attached to a storefront. It
also has some good margaritas and beer (both the Hammerhead and the Ruby are suggested) at McMenamins'
Dad Watson's.
- The Underground Tour if you find your way downtown, head over to the Pioneer Square area and
take this tour. Not only is it hilarious, but it will give you all sorts of good stories about the
underside of Seattle.
- Seattle Ferries the ferries are
a treat if you've never been on one. Walk onboard the Bainbridge Island ferry and take a round trip; or
if you have time, eat lunch on the island. You'll get wonderful views of Seattle from the water.
- Pike Place Market The farmers' market goes on here daily; see the fish tossing! Shops abound
in this multi-story complex that flows down to the piers.
- The Locks There is a ship canal that was dredged to connect Lake Washington through
Portage Bay and Lake Union all the way to Puget Sound. Wedged between Ballard and Magnolia, the locks
are a neat thing to watch as the boating traffic makes it way. Also, there is a salmon stair there that
is extremely cool during the salmon return.
- Snoqualmie Falls This one requires the use of a car, as it's about 45 minutes east of Seattle.
The falls are extremely pretty, and there is a nice hike from the top to the base and back. Directions
to the top are easy, but if you want to get the super-secret driving directions to the base, you'll have
to ask us. The nearby Salish Lodge is a really
lavish resort, but it is unfortunately, a little out of the way.
- Westlake Center
This is part of the major downtown shopping district. Shops galore, and of course,
it's the other end of the Monorail.
- Pacific Place
A little more upscale than Westlake Center, and just three blocks from the
Camlin, this block and the area around it have some good shopping and entertainment.
- Monorail Built for the World's Fair, this
mass transit prototype has but two stops at its extreme ends: Westlake Center, and Seattle Center.
- Seattle Center Home of the
Space Needle,
and during Labor Day weekend, the Bumbershoot music festival.
The Needle should be open for visitors even if you don't have a Bumbershoot pass.
- Seattle Parks Parks with nice hikes abound. For Puget Sound views, try
Golden Gardens Park on Shilshole, or
Discovery Park on Magnolia.
For Lake Union and downtown views, visit
Gas Works Park.
The Arboretum is always
a good area to hike around in. Green Lake
is a nice walk as well.

Tavern! Walk your pizza next door to have it with a brew. $
Web links
- Seattle CitySearch Despite the fact that CitySearch sites
are wholly owned by the evil TicketMaster, they have good
information about Seattle features, current events, restaraunt descriptions, and maps to all sorts of things.
